Race History

Prior to the 2010 event there were four Galway City Marathons in the early 1980s. The first race in 1981 also included a 'mini-marathon' of 13 miles and a 'micro marathon' event of 7 miles on the same day. The events were dominated by local Galway athletes.

1981 RESULTS

The first race was held on 30 May 1981. Almost 700 participants ran in the event's three races. The marathon was run on a single circuit that included adjoining villages of Oranmore and Claregalway.
